Flowing Hair Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1129
1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. PCGS graded VF-30. A very pleasing and very choice Very Fine plus specimen. The surfaces and rims are mostly smooth with only the faintest evidence of some light adjustment marks in the central portions of the obverse. Nicely toned in antique greyish tones with lighter highlights.

The first half dollar coinage and one of the rarest in the series as only 23,464 pieces were minted. Coins were delivered on October 15, 1794, and in a subsequent delivery in February 1795. These two deliveries totaled the entire production run of the coins with the date 1794. Primitive conditions at the early U.S. Mint at Philadelphia must be inferred from the use of seven obverse dies and seven reverse dies used to coin the production of 1794 half dollars; these provided eleven different die varieties for the year! The average die life produced approximately 2,000 coins. On Overton-101, the first star on the left pierces the lowest curl near the center. The point of star 2 and second curl are close. Point of star 15 joins the lower edge of the bust, with the date 8mm., slender, and evenly spaced and well centered. The reverse has 21 berries arranged 10 left and 11 right (the only 21-berries reverse). All observed specimens show a die crack from the edge to a pair of leaves below the first S (seen in the photographs provided). Pop 1 at PCGS for this variety.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000.

1796 Draped Bust Half Dollar. 15 stars. PCGS graded EF-40 PQ Overton-101. Well struck with plenty of detail on an excellent smooth planchet with only the faintest adjustment marks near the right obverse border. Lovely natural antique greyish-violet toning with some lighter highlights. A Premium Quality coin for the grade. The rims, borders, and fields are particularly choice. Fewer than 4,000 half dollars of 1796-97 were released, and of those, only a few are known to have survived. Readers of the Red Book often sit blinking in disbelief at the extremely low figure given: 3,918 pieces spread unevenly over the two dates. Authoritative estimates range from fewer than 200 to over 300 coins in collectors' hands today. Prospective bidders of the lovely Extremely Fine 40 offered in this Lot will appreciate its spectacular numismatic potential and original, untampered-with condition. Of all the rare half dollar issues, specimens of the draped bust, small eagle are the most difficult to locate, they were struck in only two years. This piece leads the way in its grade category. Pop 3; 10 finer at PCGS (PCGS # 6057) .
Estimated Value $75,000 - 80,000.

1802 Draped Bust Half Dollar. . O-101. PCGS graded AU-50 Rarity 3. Lovely blue toning around the edges. Some faint adjustment on the reverse. A highly presentable specimen of this scarce heraldic eagle date with intense blue iridescence around the outer margin and grand eye appeal. Clean surfaces double the beauty. Meanwhile, sharp devices everywhere serves to triple the desirability since this year is uncommon with a nice strike.

Boasting the lowest mintage of any heraldic eagle half dollar, just 29,980 pieces, the 1802 has long been a comparatively unheralded issue among early issues of the denomination and an extremely elusive date in AU and finer grades. Pop 5; 15 finer (PCGS # 6065) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000.

Lot 1133
1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar. PCGS Specimen 65. Full brilliant Proof obverse and proof-like on the reverse. Needle-sharp throughout. The glittering surfaces are overlaid with a blending of violet and electric blue hues which are iridescent. Yes, this handsome Hope Diamond of the Bust Half Dollar series has the distinction of being from the Overton-108 dies. Possibly, it is the first and only coin struck from those dies for ceremonial purposes (before regular business strike production began). Who can tell? Diagnostics of the obverse include star 7 which points to the stand of L in LIBERTY, well above the base. On the reverse, there are 5 berries in the branch and all have rather thick stems. Point of leaf to extreme right base of I.

But enough of the technicalities! It is the condition of this piece which sends it into low earth orbit. As any long-term collector of bust halves knows who has taken the temporary painful journey down aisle after endless aisle of America's coin bourse floors looking for high-end pieces, this coin shows all the force and power of the minting press in its bold design. Each and every star is complete. Each letter in the legends, every numeral in the date and denomination, all are crisp and clear. Centers, too, are notable for their detail. And the color! Oh, the color: deep shades of iridescence which brighten and transform into vibrant hues depending on how the coin is held under a light, almost hypnotizing in its beauty. Those who want the finest possible in an early heraldic eagle half dollar had better brace themselves. This auction won't be easy pickings. Throw out the notion that no one else will be aware of the coin's presence in the sale. Instead, toughen yourselves with a week or two of deep soul-searching while you try to steady a beating heart for what portends to be a once in a lifetime opportunity. All in readiness, accept that you may be swept away when bidding commences. However, to leave the sale with this handsome 1807 bust half dollar as a garnishment for your collection, the pride of possession will be yours, and yours alone! Pop 1; Only one graded at any service. (PCGS # 6080) .

1873 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. No arrows, closed 3. NGC graded Proof 67. Encased in NGC holder 2199656-002. Wonderful rainbow toning on both sides. Only 600 Proofs were struck without the arrows on the obverse, but only one other possess both this high technical grade from NGC. The specimen offered here doesn't just "exhibit" toning, it really flaunts it! Gorgeous colors whose vibrancy can only be hinted at by the (admittedly excellent) photographs. A needle-sharp strike accompanies the toning pyrotechnics. Given the high NGC certification, it stands to reason the surfaces would be impeccably preserved, and they are, displaying no significant hairlines and full swirling mirror reflectivity. Of course, the average collector's view of what constitutes the biggest thing in life had to change once dependable third-party grading came around in the mid-1980s. With this service followed the statistics, compiled by NGC (and PCGS) after many hundreds of thousands of coin submittals for grading. To this point in time (April 2007), the NGC census will take your breath: Pop 2; none finer (PCGS # 6431) .

Lot 1177
1916 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. First year of issue. Lovely natural toning. Great eye appeal. A satiny gem with richly imbued luster that underlies the nicely toned surface. Adequately struck for the date, indeed, about as fine as this 1916 issue is ever found with only minor lightness in the design at center. A. A. Weinman would have loved this one! (His AW monogram is set in incuse letters below the eagle's tail.) Pop 67; 4 in 67 (PCGS # 6566) .
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500.

Lot 1178
1916-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. A well struck Premium Quality white coin. From center to periphery the glare of luminous silvery luster glows. United States silver coins of 1916 possess unusual "textured" luster -- unusual and alluring. Such luster is especially nice on premium quality Uncirculated examples like the present '16-S. Compared to later issues which sport more typical mint frost, these early dates are in a class all their own. Any collector who is familiar with them may find it rewarding to add a few to his collection. Pop 168; 89 finer, 75 in 65, 13 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 6568) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,800.
